Local SEO: Your Google Business Profile Is Worth More Than Your Website

The Profile You're Ignoring Is Your Best Salesperson
When someone searches "plumber near me" or "best restaurant in [city]," Google doesn't show 10 blue links anymore. It shows a map pack — three local businesses with their name, reviews, photos, and contact info.
If you're not in that map pack, you're invisible. If you are but your profile is sparse, you lose to the competitor with 200 reviews and 50 photos.
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) isn't a directory listing. It's a landing page that Google shows to the highest-intent local searchers.
Why GBP Matters More Than Your Website (For Local)
For local searches, the user journey often skips your website entirely:
1. Person searches "background check service near me"
2. Google shows the map pack with 3 businesses
3. Person looks at reviews, photos, and hours
4. Person clicks "Call" or "Get Directions" — directly from the GBP
5. They never visit your website
Google's own data shows that 76% of people who search for something nearby visit a business within a day. And most of that conversion happens on the GBP, not your site.
The Complete GBP Optimization Checklist
Business information (non-negotiable)
Business name: Exact legal name. Don't keyword-stuff it ("Joe's Plumbing | Best Plumber in Dallas" will get you penalized).
Category: Choose the most specific primary category. "Background Check Service" is better than "Business Service."
Address: Consistent with your website and all other listings (NAP consistency)
Website URL: Link to your homepage or a location-specific landing page
Description
Write a natural, informative description. Include your city/area, your primary service, and what makes you different. 750 characters max.
Photos (this is where most businesses fail)
**Minimum 10 photos**, ideally 25+
Exterior of building (helps people find you)
Interior shots
Team photos
Product/service photos
Regular updates (add 2-3 new photos monthly)
Businesses with 100+ photos get 520% more calls than the average business. Photos are not optional.
Reviews (the #1 local ranking factor)
Quantity: More reviews = higher rankings. Period.
Quality: 4.5+ star average is the sweet spot
Recency: Reviews from the last 30 days matter more than reviews from 2 years ago
Responses: Reply to every review — positive and negative. Google confirms this affects rankings.
*How to get more reviews:*
Ask every satisfied customer directly: "Would you mind leaving us a Google review?"
Send a follow-up email with a direct link to your review page
Make it easy: create a short URL that goes straight to the review form
Never buy fake reviews. Google detects them and penalizes aggressively.
Google Posts
Post updates, offers, and events directly on your GBP. These show up in search results and signal to Google that your business is active.
Post weekly if possible, minimum monthly
Include a CTA (Book now, Call today, Learn more)
Add images to every post
Q&A Section
Monitor and answer questions. You can also pre-populate common Q&As yourself (Google allows business owners to ask and answer their own questions).
The Local SEO Ranking Factors
Google's local algorithm considers three things:
1. **Relevance**: Does your profile match what the person searched for? (Optimized category, description, and services)
2. **Distance**: How close is your business to the searcher? (You can't change this, but you can optimize for surrounding areas)
3. **Prominence**: How well-known and trusted is your business? (Reviews, citations, backlinks, website authority)
You control relevance and prominence. Focus there.
Beyond GBP: Local SEO Fundamentals
NAP consistency
Your Name, Address, and Phone number must be identical everywhere: website, GBP, Yelp, Facebook, industry directories, and any other listing. Even small differences ("St." vs "Street") can confuse Google.
Local citations
Get listed on relevant directories: Yelp, BBB, industry-specific directories, local chamber of commerce. Quality over quantity — 20 relevant citations beat 200 random ones.
Local content
Create pages and blog posts about your specific service area. "Background Check Services in Houston" with local-specific content ranks better than a generic service page.
Local backlinks
Links from local businesses, newspapers, events, and organizations carry extra weight for local rankings. Sponsor a local event, get quoted in the local paper, or partner with complementary local businesses.
For local businesses, the path to more customers doesn't start with a website redesign. It starts with a complete, optimized, review-rich Google Business Profile.
