Your Competitors Are Showing You Their Playbook (If You Know Where to Look)
Every marketing decision your competitor makes — every blog post, every landing page, every ad, every backlink — is visible if you know how to look. And most of the tools you need are free.
1. Google Search (The Most Underrated Tool)
Search your target keywords. Don't just look at who ranks — study the results.
*What to analyze:*
What content format ranks? (Guides, lists, tools, comparisons)
How long is the content? (Word count approximation)
What angle do they take? (Educational, comparative, opinionated)
Do they have rich snippets? (FAQ schema, how-to, review stars)
**The insight:** If all top results for "best background check service" are comparison articles with 3,000+ words, that's the format Google wants. Creating a 500-word product page won't cut it.
2. Their Website (Sitemap and Structure)
Visit your competitor's site. Look at their navigation, their blog categories, and their page structure.
*Quick analysis:*
Check their sitemap: `competitor.com/sitemap.xml` — this shows every page on their site
Look at their blog topics — what themes come up repeatedly?
Study their landing pages — how do they structure their sales pitch?
Check their pricing page — how do they position their tiers?
**The insight:** Their sitemap reveals their content strategy. If they have 50 blog posts about "employee screening" and 5 about "tenant screening," you know where they're focusing.
3. Google Ads Transparency Center
Google now lets anyone see any company's ads. Visit `adstransparency.google.com` and search for your competitor's name.
*What you'll see:*
Every ad they're currently running
Historical ads they've run
Ad formats (search, display, video)
Geographic targeting
**The insight:** Their ad copy reveals what messages they think convert. Their keyword targeting (inferred from ad text) shows what they're willing to pay for.
4. Social Media Audit (10 Minutes)
Visit their LinkedIn, Twitter/X, Instagram, and Facebook pages.
*What to check:*
Posting frequency — how often do they publish?
Engagement rates — which posts get the most reactions?
Content themes — what topics generate conversation?
Ad library — Facebook's Ad Library shows all active Meta ads
**The insight:** High-engagement posts reveal what their audience cares about. Those same topics likely resonate with YOUR audience too.
5. Backlink Preview (Free Tools)
While premium SEO tools show complete backlink profiles, free options exist:
Ahrefs free backlink checker: Shows top 100 backlinks for any domain
Google search operator: `link:competitor.com` (limited but free)
HARO / editorial mentions: Search their brand name in news to see where they get press
**The insight:** Where they get links shows you where to pitch. If they have links from "Background Screening Industry Association," that's a publication you should target too.
6. Technology Stack (BuiltWith / Wappalyzer)
Use free tools like BuiltWith or the Wappalyzer browser extension to see what technology your competitor uses.
*What you'll learn:*
Their CMS (WordPress, Webflow, custom)
Their analytics tools (GA4, Hotjar, Mixpanel)
Their marketing automation (HubSpot, Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign)
Their ad and retargeting pixels
**The insight:** Their tech stack reveals their marketing sophistication and spend level. A company running HubSpot Enterprise, Drift, and 6sense is investing heavily in marketing ops. A company on basic WordPress with just Google Analytics is earlier in their journey.
7. Content Gap Analysis (Manual Method)
List your competitor's top 20 blog posts (sort their blog by popularity if possible, or check which pages rank for the most keywords using free Ahrefs site explorer).
Now compare to your content. What topics do they cover that you don't?
**The insight:** These gaps are your opportunities. If your competitor ranks for "FCRA compliance guide" and you don't have that content, creating a better version is a clear path to traffic.
Turning Research Into Action
Competitive analysis is only useful if it changes what you do. Here's the conversion:
1. **Content gaps** → Add these topics to your content calendar
2. **Their top-performing ad copy** → Test similar messaging in your ads
3. **Their backlink sources** → Pitch those same publications
4. **Their high-engagement social topics** → Create your own take on those themes
5. **Their pricing positioning** → Ensure your differentiation is clear
Don't copy. Learn what works, then do it better with your unique angle and voice.
Competitive intelligence isn't about mimicking your competitors. It's about understanding the playing field so you can find the gaps they've left wide open.
