How to Migrate Your Website Without Losing SEO Rankings

You've seen it happen. A company redesigns their website, launches it on a Friday, and by Monday organic traffic has dropped 40%. Rankings for their top keywords disappear. The phone stops ringing.
Website migrations — changing your CMS, redesigning your site, switching domains, or restructuring your URLs — are the highest-risk activity in SEO. When done poorly, the damage can take 6-12 months to recover from. When done well, you maintain or even improve rankings.
The difference is preparation.
The Pre-Migration Checklist
1. Crawl and document your current site
Before changing anything, crawl your existing site and record:
Every URL and its current ranking keywords
All pages that receive organic traffic (check Google Analytics)
Your top 50 pages by traffic — these are your priority
All existing redirects
Your XML sitemap
All internal links
This becomes your migration map. If you don't know what you have, you can't protect it.
2. Plan your URL structure
If URLs are changing (and they usually are in a migration), create a complete redirect map: old URL → new URL, for every single page.
**Critical:** Every old URL must redirect to the most relevant new URL. Not to the homepage. Not to a category page. To the specific equivalent page.
The redirect map is the single most important migration document. Errors here cause the biggest traffic losses.
3. Preserve on-page SEO elements
For every page, ensure the new version maintains:
Title tags (or improved versions)
Meta descriptions
H1 tags
Image alt text
Internal linking structure
Schema markup
Many redesigns accidentally strip SEO elements because the new design templates don't include them.
4. Test on staging first
Set up the new site on a staging domain. Crawl it. Check:
Are all redirects working?
Are any pages returning 404 errors?
Are title tags and meta descriptions intact?
Is the XML sitemap correct?
Are canonical tags pointing to the right URLs?
Is robots.txt allowing Google to crawl everything it should?
Fix every issue on staging before touching production.
Migration Day Checklist
Launch
Deploy the new site
Verify all redirects are live (spot-check your top 50 pages)
Submit the new XML sitemap to Google Search Console
Request indexing for your top 20 pages
Immediate verification
Check that robots.txt isn't blocking important pages (this mistake happens surprisingly often)
Verify canonical tags are correct
Confirm HTTPS is working on all pages
Test mobile rendering
Monitor (first 48 hours)
Watch Google Search Console for crawl errors
Check server logs for 404s
Monitor traffic in real-time for any dramatic drops
Test internal search and navigation
Post-Migration Monitoring (Weeks 1-4)
Week 1
Check Search Console for indexing issues daily
Monitor organic traffic — a small dip (5-10%) is normal; larger drops need investigation
Fix any crawl errors as they appear
Verify your top 50 pages are being re-crawled
Week 2
Compare keyword rankings to pre-migration baseline
Check that new pages are appearing in search results
Look for any redirect chains (A → B → C, which should be A → C)
Monitor page speed on the new site
Weeks 3-4
Traffic should be stabilizing or recovering
If specific pages haven't recovered, investigate individually
Check for any lingering 404s from old URLs
Update external links where possible (social profiles, directories, partner sites)
The Mistakes That Kill Migrations
1. **Redirecting everything to the homepage** — Google sees this as a lost page, not a moved page
2. **Forgetting about images** — If image URLs changed and old ones return 404s, you lose image search traffic
3. **Blocking crawlers on launch** — A leftover noindex tag or robots.txt rule from staging
4. **Changing URL structure AND content simultaneously** — Google can't tell if ranking changes are from the URL change or the content change. Change one thing at a time.
5. **Not monitoring after launch** — The first 2 weeks post-migration are critical. Catching issues early prevents permanent damage.
When Migration Actually Improves SEO
A well-executed migration can improve rankings when:
You move from a slow platform to a fast one
You consolidate thin content into comprehensive pages
You fix a broken URL structure
You implement proper schema markup for the first time
You move from HTTP to HTTPS (if you haven't already)
The key: protect what's working while improving what isn't.
A website migration is surgery for your SEO. Done carefully with the right preparation, the patient recovers stronger. Done hastily, the damage can last months.
